William Carter, fl. 1843-1863. A Pair of Still Lives. Watercolour on paper. 28 x 38 cms. Signed. Not dated, but painted about 1855-60.

Fine watercolour paintings. The attention to detail, each vein on each leaf, and each growth of moss; it is fine painting of Pre-Raphaelite quality. John Ruskin, the Art critic, social commentator, poet, author and artist was influential on artists through his lectures and critical writings at the time, in which he stated that painting should offer faithful representation of nature in its most intimate and exquisite detail.
