Carved wooden okimono of a Japanese rural demi-god. 19th century.

IMGP2566.JPG

Extraordinary Japanese carved wood rural demi-god. Circa 1860. He holds a rock crystal sphere around which it must have been carved from one piece, as the arms and hands enclose it so that it cannot be removed.

The sphere is the symbol of his power over the future and having influence on the harvest and other aspects of life, which will be auspicious if he is honoured by mortals.
