White-winged duck, is also known as the Spirit Duck because of it’s
haunting eerie calls, now only inhabit remote areas of peat swamp forest in the
jungles of south-east Asia.
This duck is one of the largest to breed in tree cavities.
Around 550 White-winged ducks now survive in the world. At the turn
of the 20th century, the species was thought to be common in south-east Asian
rain forests, but deforestation has since destroyed two thirds of this habitat.
Between 1967 and 1990, The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust conducted a captive
breeding and re-introduction programme in the UK,India and Thailand to help
save the species.
